How to Supplement Calcium for Laying Hens

Calcium is a crucial component of eggshells, making it an essential nutrient for improving egg production in laying hens. However, calcium supplementation requires careful attention to both timing and dosage. Here are some guidelines to ensure effective calcium supplementation:

1. Maintain the Calcium to Phosphorus Ratio:
When supplementing calcium, it's important to consider not only the calcium content but also the phosphorus levels. Controlling the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio enhances calcium absorption. Opt for suitable calcium sources such as eggshell powder, followed by shell powder and bone meal. Eggshell powder, with its uniform particle size and appropriate calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, is ideal for chicken feeding habits, facilitating better calcium digestion and absorption compared to other sources.

2. Commence Calcium Supplementation Two Weeks Before Egg Laying:
To optimize egg production and ensure high-quality eggs, start calcium supplementation two weeks before the laying period. Maintaining a calcium content of 3%-3.5% in the laying hen's diet prevents calcium deficiency, avoiding the need to use bone marrow as a calcium source and meeting the chicken's calcium requirements during normal egg production.

3. Consider Phosphorus and Vitamin Additions:
The absorption of calcium is influenced by the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Balancing this ratio within the range of 2:1 to 1:1 enhances calcium utilization. Additionally, supplement vitamin D3 to promote calcium absorption in the small intestine and normal bone marrow calcification. This promotes better eggshell quality and an improved egg production rate.

4. Separate Calcium Feed from Other Feeds:
Feed calcium separately from other feeds to maximize its utilization and minimize waste. Provide low-calcium feed when calcium demand is low and introduce calcium-rich raw materials when demand is high. This targeted approach ensures efficient calcium supplementation while adjusting nutrient intake appropriately, reducing calcium wastage.

Understanding the physiological needs of laying hens is essential for effective calcium supplementation, ensuring optimal calcium utilization in feed.
